  • Page 2 (Level 2, harder): It has twelve number sums, six “make 10” sums like 7 + ? = 10, and a story sum about ducks on a pond.
  • Page 3: an answer key for both levels.

How to teach addition within 10

A ten frame is two rows of five, so children can see numbers instead of counting every dot. Five fills the top row, and seven is a full row plus two. Ask your child to tell you how many dots they see without counting one by one, then add the second colour. Once the frame makes sense, sums like 6 + 3 become “six, then count on three: seven, eight, nine.”

What to watch for

Counting all of the dots from one again and again is slow. Encourage counting on from the bigger number: for 2 + 7, start at seven and count on two. Watch for pairs that make ten, as these are the most useful facts to know by heart.

Game: Make ten

Lay out ten cups. Turn some upside down and ask how many more need turning to make ten. Or play with a pack of cards (ace to nine) and find pairs that add up to ten.

Everyday practice

Ten is everywhere: ten fingers, ten toes, ten pegs in a row. When laying the table, ask how many plates are out and how many more are needed for ten. Egg boxes with ten spaces make a handy ten frame too.

Questions to ask while they work

  • How many dots are in the top row?
  • How many more do we need to make ten?
  • Which number is bigger? Can you count on from it?

Practise next

Try addition within 5, subtraction within 10, skip counting. Check that your child can write the numbers with number tracing 1 to 10.

Addition within 10 questions

What is a ten frame?

A ten frame is a grid of two rows of five. Filling it with dots or counters shows how close a number is to five and to ten, which makes adding quicker.

Which addition facts should my child learn first?

Doubles (2 + 2, 3 + 3), adding one, and the pairs that make ten (1 + 9, 2 + 8, 3 + 7, 4 + 6, 5 + 5) are the most useful facts to learn first.
