Tips for little palaeontologists

  • Ages 3–4: start with the T. rex, the Triceratops and the long-necked Brachiosaurus. Stomp, roar and stretch like each one!
  • Ages 5–6: look for clues: horns, plates, spikes, sails, crests and long necks are how scientists tell dinosaurs apart.
  • Ages 7–8: sort them into plant-eaters and meat-eaters, and talk about how we know: fossils of teeth, bones and footprints.
  • Wrong answers are fine. The quiz waits for the right one, and only first tries count towards the stars.

Questions from parents

What age is this dinosaur quiz for?

Children aged about 3 to 8. Younger children enjoy the pictures with a grown-up; older children can read the names and play alone.

Is a Pteranodon a dinosaur?

No. Pteranodon was a flying reptile called a pterosaur. It lived at the same time as the dinosaurs, so we include it here, but scientists keep it in a separate group.

Are these real photos?

No one has ever photographed a living dinosaur, so these are illustrations: AI-generated for Parent Oven and checked against what fossils tell us about each animal’s shape.

Is it free, and do we need an account?

Yes, it is free and there is nothing to sign up for. It works in the browser on phones, tablets and computers.
