How to use black and white flash cards
- Hold a card 20 to 30 cm (8 to 12 inches) from your baby’s face: that is where newborns see best.
- Show one card at a time and move it slowly from side to side. Watch your baby follow it.
- Stop when your baby looks away or fusses. A minute or two is plenty.
- Prop a full-page card next to the changing mat or in the cot during awake tummy time.

Flash card questions
What age are baby flash cards for?
High-contrast black and white cards suit newborns from birth to about 6 months. Picture-and-word cards like first words, animals and fruits suit babies from about 6 to 9 months up to age 3.
How do I print the flash cards?
Print on A4 or US Letter (choose “Fit to page”). Thick paper or card stock makes them sturdier. Cut along the dotted lines; you can laminate them or cover them with clear tape for little hands.
Should I use the cut-out or the full-page version?
Cut-out cards (4 per page) are easy to hold and save paper. Full-page cards are big and bold: good for newborns, for showing a group, or for sticking on the wall.
Can my baby use the online viewer?
Yes, with you. Tap the card or swipe to see the next one, and tap “Say it” to hear the word. Keep screen time short for babies and toddlers; the printed cards are best for everyday play.
Are these flash cards free?
Yes. Every set is free for home, nursery and classroom use, with no sign-up.
