Saying /kw/ clearly

Say /k/ and then /w/ very quickly together: /kw/. Round your lips for the /w/ part, as if you are about to whistle.

Teaching /kw/ step by step

Introduce q and u as best friends that always go together. Write qu on a card and hold the two letters side by side. Then quack like a duck, pointing out that quack starts with /kw/. Say queen, quick, quiet and quilt slowly, and let your child spot the /k/ followed by the /w/.

Words that start with /kw/

Quack, quick, quiz, quilt, quite, quest, quarter, quarrel.

Common mix-ups

In a few words, such as queue, qu sounds like plain /k/. Those are rare for young readers. Keep the focus on /kw/, the sound in most early q words.

Game: Quiet queen

Your child is the queen or king, sitting quietly on a cushion throne. You whisper a word: if it starts with /kw/, they wave their royal hand. If not, they stay as still as a statue.

Around the house

Say “quick, quick!” when hurrying out the door, and “quiet, please” at bedtime: both start with /kw/.

Say it fast

The queen quickly quacks a quiet question.

Writing the letter q

Say /kw/ while forming the letter on our capital Q and small q sheets. Older children can try joined-up cursive q.

Letter Q sound questions

Why does q always have a u after it?

In English, q is almost always followed by u, and together they say /kw/. Teaching them as a pair is simpler for children.

Why are there only a few q pictures?

Not many words start with q, and fewer still are easy to draw. Three clear targets keep the activity fair.
