How to Teach Shapes in 5 Steps

  1. Spot it: find the shape around the house or on a walk.
  2. Name it: say the name and count its sides and corners together.
  3. Trace it: follow the dashes with a finger, then a crayon.
  4. Draw it: join the dots, then try one freehand.
  5. Find it: hunt for the shape in the mix on the worksheet and colour it in.

Short, playful sessions work best. One shape a day, with a real-life hunt, is plenty.

Shapes grouped by their sides

Frequently Asked Questions

What shapes should preschoolers learn first?

Start with the circle, square and triangle, then add the rectangle, oval and star. Diamonds, pentagons and hexagons usually come a little later, around kindergarten.

How do I teach shapes at home?

Name shapes in everyday life, such as round plates, square tiles and rectangular doors. Then trace and draw them, and play hunting games. Counting sides and corners helps children tell similar shapes apart.

What age are these shapes worksheets for?

Most children enjoy them from about 3 to 6. Younger children can trace with a finger or a thick crayon; older children can count sides and corners and draw their own.

What is the difference between a diamond and a rhombus?

There is no difference in shape. Rhombus is the maths name for a four-sided shape with equal sides, and diamond is the everyday name when it stands on one point.

Can I use these worksheets in my classroom?

Yes. Every worksheet is free for home and classroom use. Please share the page link rather than re-uploading the PDF.
