What’s on the red worksheet

Trace red, circle the red things among eight pictures, colour the dotted squares to find a hidden heart and trace “An apple is red.”

Things that are red

  • Strawberries, cherries, tomatoes and red apples
  • A fire engine and many post boxes
  • Stop signs and the top light on a traffic light
  • Ladybugs and some roses and poppies
  • Rubies and many party balloons

Mixing red

Red is a primary colour, so you cannot mix it from other paints. You can change it, though: add white to make pink, add a little black for a deep maroon, or mix it with yellow to make orange.

Shades of red

Light red is often called pink or coral. Darker reds have names like crimson, scarlet, cherry and maroon. Saying “this red is darker than that red” is a great way to build describing words.

Activity: Red treasure basket

Give your child a basket and two minutes to find five red things around the house. Line them up from lightest to darkest. Then ask which one is the biggest, the softest or the smoothest.

Talking about red

Use red in everyday sentences: “Can you pass the red cup?”, “Stop at the red light”, “Your cheeks are red from running”. Hearing the word in real moments helps it stick far better than drills.

Read the word red

Red is also a Dolch sight word. When your child knows the colour, practise reading the word with the sight word “red” worksheet.

Red questions

Why is red often a child’s first colour word?

Red is bright, warm and stands out strongly against most backgrounds, so babies and toddlers notice it early. It also appears in many picture books and toys.

What two colours make red?

None. Red is a primary colour in paint, along with yellow and blue, which means it cannot be mixed from other paints. That is what makes it a good starting colour.
