What’s on the blue worksheet

Trace blue, circle the blue things among eight pictures, colour the dotted squares to find a hidden fish and trace “The sky is blue.”

Things that are blue

  • The sky on a sunny day and the sea
  • Blueberries, which are blue on the outside
  • Whales, some birds and butterflies
  • Jeans, school uniforms and many caps
  • Water droplets in pictures and maps

Mixing blue

Blue is a primary colour in paint. Mix it with yellow to make green, with red to make purple, or with white for a soft sky blue. A little black makes a deep navy.

Shades of blue

Light blues include sky blue and baby blue. Bright blues are royal blue and cobalt, and dark blues are navy and midnight blue. Turquoise sits between blue and green.

Activity: Water colour magic

Fill three clear cups with water. Add one drop of blue food colouring to the first, two to the second and five to the third. Your child lines them up from lightest to darkest and talks about which blue they like best.

Talking about blue

Look up during a walk and ask: “Is the sky blue today, or grey?” Point out blue cars, blue doors and blue flowers. Changing skies are a natural way to talk about light and dark blue.

Read the word blue

Blue is also a Dolch sight word. When your child knows the colour, practise reading the word with the sight word “blue” worksheet.

Blue questions

Why is the sky blue?

Sunlight is made of many colours. Air scatters blue light more than other colours, so blue light reaches our eyes from all over the sky. At sunset, the light travels further and looks orange or red.

What colours can you make with blue?

Blue and yellow make green, and blue and red make purple. Adding white makes lighter blues and adding a tiny bit of black makes darker ones.
