Sight Word “big” Worksheet – Trace, Write and Find
“Big” is a short, sound-it-out word with a meaning every child loves: giants, trucks, elephants and huge piles of leaves.
What’s on the “big” worksheet
Read and trace “big”, write it alone, circle it among dig, bag, pig, bin and bug, then trace “A big red bus.”
Prints on A4 or US Letter (choose “Fit to page”).
How to teach “big”
Blend b-i-g together and let your child stretch their arms wide each time they say it. Because it follows regular sounds, big is a good bridge between phonics and sight reading. Look for it on picture book covers and shop signs.
Sentences with “big”
- Look at the big dog.
- I have a big red hat.
- The truck is big.
- A big fish swam by.
Game: Big and little sort
Collect six or seven household objects. Your child holds up each one, decides if it is big or little, and places it next to the matching word card. Swap two objects and ask them to read the cards again.
Practise next
Try “little” and “red” next: children love using them to describe things together.
Questions about “big”
Is big a sight word or a phonics word?
Both. It is on the Dolch pre-primer list because it appears so often, but it is also easy to decode, which builds confidence.
My child writes dig instead of big. What helps?
This is a common b and d mix-up. Draw a bat for b first, then the ball, so the stick comes before the circle.
