Colour Yellow Worksheet
Yellow is sunny and cheerful: the colour of bananas, lemons and little chicks. It is a bright, happy colour that children love to use for suns and stars. Your child traces the word yellow, circles yellow things, colours a hidden picture and traces a sentence.
What’s on the yellow worksheet
Trace yellow, circle the yellow things among eight pictures, colour the dotted squares to find a hidden sun and trace “A banana is yellow.”
Things that are yellow
- Bananas, lemons, sweetcorn and yellow peppers
- Ducklings, chicks and canaries
- Sunflowers and daffodils
- School buses and many raincoats
- The sun and stars in children’s drawings
Mixing yellow
Yellow is a primary colour in paint. Mix it with blue to make green or with red to make orange. Because yellow is so light, add darker colours a tiny bit at a time.
Shades of yellow
Pale yellow is called lemon or cream. Golden yellow and mustard are deeper and warmer. Ask your child whether a banana is the same yellow as a lemon. It is usually not!
Activity: Sunshine collage
Draw a big circle on paper. Your child fills it with anything yellow: torn magazine pages, tissue paper, stickers or crayon. Add rays around the edge and hang the sunshine where everyone can see it.
Talking about yellow
Mention yellow when you cook: “Let’s crack the egg. Look at the yellow yolk.” Or on a walk: “Can you see any yellow flowers?” Pairing the word with something to look at makes it easy to learn.
Read the word yellow
Yellow is also a Dolch sight word. When your child knows the colour, practise reading the word with the sight word “yellow” worksheet.

Yellow questions
Why is yellow hard to see on white paper?
Yellow is very light, so there is not much contrast with white. That is why the tracing on this worksheet is grey, while the colour patches show the yellow itself.
What colours can you make with yellow?
Yellow and blue make green, and yellow and red make orange. Mixing a little yellow into other colours makes them warmer and brighter.
