What’s on the orange worksheet

Trace orange, circle the orange things among eight pictures, colour the dotted squares to find a hidden carrot and trace “A carrot is orange.”

Things that are orange

  • Oranges, carrots, pumpkins and apricots
  • Foxes, tigers and goldfish
  • Autumn leaves and sunset skies
  • Traffic cones and safety vests
  • Marigolds and some butterflies

Mixing orange

Orange is a secondary colour: mix red and yellow paint. More yellow gives a light, sunny orange; more red gives a deep, burnt orange. Adding white makes a soft peach colour.

Shades of orange

Light oranges include peach and apricot. Bright orange is sometimes called tangerine. Deeper oranges are amber, rust and burnt orange, like autumn leaves.

Activity: Fruit and veg rainbow

At the shop or in the kitchen, help your child find orange foods: carrots, oranges, sweet potatoes, peppers. Line them up and talk about which ones are the same orange and which are darker.

Talking about orange

Ask questions at snack time: “Would you like an orange slice? What colour is it?” Children enjoy the joke that the fruit and the colour share a name.

Orange questions

Did the fruit or the colour come first?

The fruit. The word orange was used for the fruit first, and the colour was later named after it. Before that, English speakers often called the colour yellow-red.

What two colours make orange?

Red and yellow make orange. Start with yellow and add red a little at a time, because red is strong and quickly takes over.
