Colour Brown Worksheet
Brown is the colour of chocolate, tree trunks and teddy bears. It is warm and earthy, and it is everywhere outside: soil, wood, nuts and leaves. This page has brown to trace, brown things to circle, a teddy bear to reveal and a sentence.
What’s on the brown worksheet
Trace brown, circle the brown things among eight pictures, colour the dotted squares to find a hidden teddy bear and trace “A bear is brown.”
Things that are brown
- Tree trunks, logs and wooden furniture
- Chocolate, toast, cocoa and many breads
- Bears, horses, dogs and squirrels
- Soil, mud and conkers or chestnuts
- Dry autumn leaves and pine cones
Mixing brown
Brown appears when you mix lots of colours together, which is why paint water often turns brown. A simple way is to mix orange and a little blue, or red and green. Add white for a light tan.
Shades of brown
Light browns are beige, tan and sand. Middle browns include caramel and chestnut. Dark browns have names like chocolate and coffee. Wood often shows several browns in one board.
Activity: Nature colour walk
Take an egg box on a walk and collect small brown things: twigs, seeds, bark, a leaf. Back home, your child sorts them from lightest to darkest brown and counts how many they found.
Talking about brown
Use brown at mealtimes: “Your toast is golden brown”, “This bread is darker brown than that one.” Food is a natural, everyday way to compare light and dark.
Read the word brown
Brown is also a Dolch sight word. When your child knows the colour, practise reading the word with the sight word “brown” worksheet.

Brown questions
How do you make brown paint?
Mix the three primary colours, red, yellow and blue, or mix two opposite colours, such as orange and blue. Add more of one colour to make the brown warmer or cooler.
Why does my child’s painting always turn brown?
When many wet colours are mixed together, they turn brown. Let each colour dry before adding the next, or give your child a separate brush for each colour.
