Colour Black Worksheet

Black is the darkest colour: the colour of the night sky, a top hat and a cat in a story. It makes other colours stand out, which is why it is used for outlines. Your child traces black, circles black things, colours a hidden cat and traces a sentence.

Colour black worksheet: trace the word black, circle the black things, colour the dotted squares to find a hidden cat and trace “My cat is black.”

What’s on the black worksheet

Trace black, circle the black things among eight pictures, colour the dotted squares to find a hidden cat and trace “My cat is black.”

Things that are black

  • The night sky and shadows
  • Crows, ants, spiders and some cats and dogs
  • Tyres, road markings and piano keys
  • Top hats, wellies and many shoes
  • Coal, pepper and liquorice

Mixing black

In paint, black is usually bought rather than mixed, but mixing very dark blue, red and brown gets close. A tiny drop of black makes any colour darker, so always add it a little at a time.

Shades of black

Black has fewer shade names, but you can say jet black, charcoal and soft black. Mix black with white and you get greys, from light silver to dark slate.

Activity: Shadow spotting

On a sunny day, go outside and look at your shadows. Your child traces round a shadow with chalk, then watches how it moves later. Shadows look black or dark grey and change size through the day.

Talking about black

Black is useful for contrast: “Can you see the black writing on the white page?”, “The black cat is hard to see at night.” Talking about what is easy or hard to see builds observation skills.

Read the word black

Black is also a Dolch sight word. When your child knows the colour, practise reading the word with the sight word “black” worksheet.

Black questions

Is black a colour?

In everyday life, yes. In science, black is what we see when almost no light reaches our eyes. For children, it is a colour word like any other.

Why are outlines in colouring books black?

Black lines stand out against almost every colour, so children can see where to colour. That is why the outlines on this worksheet are dark.
