What’s on the “after” worksheet

Read and trace “after”, write it alone, circle it among look-alikes such as alter, often, rafter, fat and eater, then trace “We play after lunch.”.

How to teach “after”

After can be sounded out in two chunks, af-ter, so let your child clap the two beats first. Then make a quick timeline of their morning with three drawings and ask: what did you do after breakfast? Answering in full sentences keeps the word in their ears and on their lips.

Sentences with “after”

  • We play after lunch.
  • After the rain, we jump in puddles.
  • Who comes after you?
  • The dog ran after the ball.

Game: First, then, after

Line up three picture cards that show a sequence, such as an egg, a chick and a hen. Your child places a card that says “after” between two pictures and explains: the chick comes after the egg.

“after” is word 1 of 41 on the Dolch first grade list, usually met around ages 6–7 after the primer words.

Practise next

Try “again” and “before” next: they are also time words that help children describe what happens when.

Questions about “after”

Is after hard for children to read?

Not usually. It follows regular phonics in two parts, af and ter. The -er ending is the tricky bit, so point it out.

What is the opposite of after?

Before. Teaching the two together helps children talk about order: before bed, after bath.
