Four short activities: trace “again”, write it on your own, find it in a grid with gain, agent, train, rain and align, and trace the sentence “Read it again, please!”.

Teaching tips for “again”

Again is a rule-breaker: the ai in the middle usually sounds like “e”, as in again rhymes with men or ten in many accents. Write it on a card and underline gain. Then play any game your child likes, and only start a new round when they read the card and say “again!”

“again” in a sentence

  • Read it again, please!
  • Can we go again?
  • The bird sang again.
  • Try again, you can do it.

Try this game: Again and again

Choose a silly action like a hop or a clap. Hold up the again card: your child repeats the action and adds one more each time. See how long the chain gets before someone giggles too much to continue.

You will find “again” at number 2 of 41 on the Dolch first grade list. Most children reach it at ages 6–7, once the primer words feel easy.

What to learn next

Good next words are “once” and “every”, because they also describe how often something happens.

“again”: quick answers

How do you pronounce again?

Both “a-gen” and “a-gain” are correct, depending on your accent. Teach the way it is said where you live.

Why is again a sight word?

The ai does not make its usual long a sound in many accents, so children cannot reliably sound it out. It is also very common in stories.
