How to teach “know”
Know has a silent k and the ow sound of snow. Teach the silent k first: write know and cross out the k, then read “now”… but the ow says “oh” here, like in snow. Practise with yes-or-no questions: do you know where your shoes are? I know!
Game: Do you know?
Ask your child easy and tricky questions: do you know what colour a banana is? Do you know how many legs an octopus has? They answer “I know!” or “I don’t know!” and hold up the card.
Practise next
Try “think” and “could” next: think is another thinking word, and could also has a silent letter.
Questions about “know”
Why is there a k in know?
Hundreds of years ago the k was spoken. The sound disappeared but the spelling stayed. Knee, knot and knife work the same way.
