How to teach “said”

Said sounds like “sed”, but it is spelled with ai. Tell your child this is a rule-breaker word and give it a voice: whenever you read said, you both put on a funny talking voice. Read it in short speech sentences about your family.

Sentences with “said”

  • Mum said yes.
  • The dog said woof.
  • I said hello to Sam.
  • “Come here,” said Dad.

Game: Who said it?

Write sentences with said and the name of a family member or animal: “Dad said hi”, “the cow said moo”. Read one together and your child acts out the voice. Then they guess who said the next sentence before reading it.

Practise next

Try “see” and “look” next: they often follow said in story sentences.

Questions about “said”

Why is said spelled with ai?

It is an old spelling that has not changed even though the way we say it did. That is why said is practised by sight.

Gently, yes. Praise them for hearing the sounds correctly, then show the real spelling and practise it on the worksheet.
