Free Sight Word “how” Worksheet for Kids
“How” is a question word that asks about the way something happens: how do you make a cake? How are you? How many?
The “how” page at a glance
Children trace “how”, write it from memory, hunt for it among who, now, cow, hot and show, and finish by tracing “How are you today?”.
Helping your child learn “how”
How has the ow sound, as in cow and now. Write how, now, cow and wow in a list and read it together, then add a picture of a cow. Make a “how” question jar: write questions like how many legs does a spider have? and pull one out each day.
Play How do you…?
Ask silly questions with how: how do you walk like a penguin? How do you laugh like a hyena? Your child shows you. Then they ask you a how question.
Example sentences
- How are you today?
- How do you ride a bike?
- How many fish are there?
- How big is the moon?
On the Dolch first grade list, “how” sits at number 19 of 41. Children often learn it between ages 6–7, building on the primer words.
Where to go next
After this one, move on to “when” and “know” (when is another question word, and know is spelled with the same ow letters).
