School Admission Age Calculator: Which Class Can My Child Join?

Find your child’s exact age on the admission cut-off date and see which class they can join: Nursery, LKG, UKG (Balvatika 1 to 3) or Class 1, under the national 6+ rule, Kendriya Vidyalaya rules, Delhi, Maharashtra or Karnataka. It also tells you the year your child can start Class 1. Nothing you type leaves your phone.

Important: not official advice. Confirm with the school before you apply.

    • Rules change every year and vary by state, board and school.
    • For general information only: not official advice from any school, board or government.

Use the date in your school’s admission notice. It is often called the cut-off date.

Nothing you type is saved or sent anywhere. It all stays on your phone.

Enter your child’s date of birth, the school year and your school’s rules. You will see the exact age on the cut-off date, which classes your child can join, and the year they can start Class 1.

    How to use it

    1. Enter your child’s date of birth as on the birth certificate.
    2. Pick the school year you are applying for. Admissions for a school year usually open between November and March before it starts.
    3. Choose the rules. If your school is not a Kendriya Vidyalaya and not in Delhi, Maharashtra or Karnataka, choose the national guideline and set the cut-off date from your school’s admission notice.
    4. Tap Check which class. Each class shows whether your child is eligible, by how many days they miss it, and the range of birth dates the class accepts that year.

The 6+ rule for Class 1, explained

The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 changed the school structure to 5+3+3+4. The first 5 years are the foundational stage: 3 years of preschool (ages 3 to 6) and Classes 1 and 2 (ages 6 to 8). So a child joins Class 1 after completing 6 years. The Ministry of Education has directed all states and union territories to admit children to Class 1 only at 6+, and KVS, Delhi and other boards are now moving to it.

    Class (NEP name)Usual minimum age
    Nursery (Balvatika 1)3+ years
    LKG (Balvatika 2)4+ years
    UKG (Balvatika 3)5+ years
    Class 16+ years

“6+” means 6 years completed on the cut-off date. A child born on the cut-off date itself just qualifies. The cut-off date is not the same everywhere: 31 March is common (KVS, Delhi and many CBSE schools), while some states use 1 June, 30 June, 31 July or 31 December. A few days can decide the year your child starts, so always check the date in the notice.

Delhi and Maharashtra are changing their rules in stages over the next few years, so the result depends on the school year you pick. For Maharashtra Class 1 between 2027-28 and 2029-30 the new GR does not say which date applies, so the calculator uses the older 31 December rule and marks the result “Likely eligible”: please confirm it with the school.

    Before you apply

    • Read the latest admission notice of the school, board or state. Rules can change between one year and the next, and private schools sometimes add their own limits.
    • Keep the birth certificate ready; it is the document schools use to check age. Many schools also ask for Aadhaar and address proof.
    • If your child misses the cut-off by a few days, ask whether the head of school can relax it (Delhi allows up to 1 month, Maharashtra up to 15 days).
    • Children moving from another recognised school after passing a class usually join the next class even if their age does not match the table.

This calculator was checked against the official notices listed below on 31 October 2026. It is for guidance only; the school’s decision is final.

Is my child ready for school?

Age is the rule, but readiness is about more than age. Children who can follow simple instructions, use the toilet, share, hold a crayon and sit for a short story usually settle in well. Our school readiness checklist goes through the skills one by one, and these free printables help at each stage:

    Questions

My child is 5 years 10 months on 31 March. Can they join Class 1?

Under the 6+ rule, no: they would join UKG (Balvatika 3) this year and Class 1 next year. Some states and schools are still moving to 6+, so check your school’s rules in the calculator. Delhi still allows 5+ for Class 1 in 2026-27 and 2027-28.

    What does “3+ years” mean?

That the child has completed 3 years on or before the cut-off date. With a 31 March cut-off, a child born on 31 March 2023 is 3+ for 2026-27, but one born on 1 April 2023 is not and joins a year later. (KVS makes a one-day exception for Class 1.)

Is there an upper age limit?

Some boards have one. KVS takes children under 8 for Class 1 and Delhi under 7 from 2028-29. For other states, ask the school. The calculator shows the limit where the rules set one.

My child was born in the middle of the year. Will they always be the oldest or youngest?

Yes, compared with classmates. Children born just after the cut-off are the oldest in their class and those born just before it the youngest. Both are normal, and the gap evens out in the early school years.

Do CBSE and ICSE have their own age rules?

Schools generally follow the age rules of the state or union territory they are in, while Kendriya Vidyalayas follow the KVS rules everywhere. That is why a CBSE school in Mumbai may use a different cut-off from one in Delhi. Check the school’s own notice.
