How to teach with this pack
Do one or two sheets a day in the week before Holi rather than the whole pack at once. This order works well:
- Start with the picture chart (5 minutes). Say each word and ask one question: “What do we fill the pichkari with? What do we eat at Holi?”
- Trace slowly, saying the sounds. Start each letter at the top: “d-r-u-m, drum”, “m-oo-n, moon”.
- Beginning sounds: stretch the first sound. Say “www-ater” and “p-p-paint”. Sweets starts with /s/ followed by /w/, so stretch the first sound only.
- Colour mixing: a real science moment. Colour lightly with the first crayon, then go over it with the second. Paints or felt-tip pens give brighter results than crayons, especially for purple.
- Counting: touch each picture once. Nine flowers is the hardest box. Cross off each one as it is counted.
- Story sequencing: talk before you glue. Explain that the bonfire is lit the night before Holi, so it comes first. Older children can hear the short story of Prahlad and Holika.
- Colour the pictures last. The coloring pages are a calm way to end a busy, colourful day.
What to expect at each age
A rough guide, not a test: children move at different speeds, and that is normal. For reference, the US Common Core asks kindergarteners to count up to 10 scattered objects (K.CC.B.5) and to hear the first sound in simple words (RF.K.2.D).
Age 3–4
- Picture chart, colouring and matching
- Counting up to 5 with your help
- AB patterns (balloon, flower)
- Naming red, yellow and blue
- 10 minutes at a time
Age 4–5
- Counting up to 10, crossing off as they go
- Beginning sounds for most letters
- AB and AAB patterns
- Predicting a mixed colour before trying it
- Ordering the Holi story cards
Age 5–7
- Word search on their own
- ABB and ABC patterns
- Writing the three new colour names
- Retelling the story in full sentences
- Explaining why the bonfire comes first
Common mistakes and quick fixes
- Pressing hard with the first crayon. Colour lightly first so the second colour can mix in.
- Expecting a perfect purple from crayons. Red and blue crayons often make a muddy purple; try paint and talk about why.
- Colours near the eyes. With little ones, use gentle, skin-safe colours, keep them on cheeks and hands, and away from eyes and mouths.
- Counting flowers twice. Cross off each one as it is counted.
- Naming the letter instead of the sound. “/p/ for paint”, not “pee for paint”.
When is Holi 2027?
Drik Panchang gives Holika Dahan, the bonfire night, as Sunday 21 March 2027 and Rangwali Holi, the day of colours, as Monday 22 March 2027. India’s central government holiday list marks Holika Dahan on 22 March and Holi on Tuesday 23 March, so check your local calendar or school notice.
What Holi celebrates
Holi welcomes spring and celebrates good winning over bad. The bonfire remembers the story of young Prahlad, who was kept safe, and Holika, who was not. The next day, families and friends throw coloured powder and water, play music and share sweets such as gujiya.
Why colour mixing fits Holi
Red, yellow and blue are primary colours: mixing any two makes a new secondary colour. Children have just spent a day watching colours mix on clothes and faces, so this is the perfect moment to learn how it works.
