How to write अ
Devanagari letters hang from a top line called the शिरोरेखा (shirorekha). Children usually find it easiest to write the body of अ first and to draw the top line last, from left to right, so the letter is “roofed” at the end.
अ has no मात्रा of its own: every consonant already carries the अ sound, so क is “ka”.
अ and आ are a pair: one short and one long sound. Say both and let your child hear the difference.
Tip for parents
Watch for mix-ups with आ, which looks similar. The find-and-circle box on the sheet mixes the two, so your child has to look carefully (the answer is printed small in the footer).

Why does the worksheet say to draw the top line last?
Most Hindi handwriting books teach children to write the shape first and then add the शिरोरेखा, so the line joins the letter neatly. The dotted top line on the sheet shows where it goes.
