Annaprashan – also called Mukhe Bhaat in Bengali homes and Choroonu in Kerala – marks a baby’s first taste of rice, often around six months. Families gather, a little kheer or rice is offered and, in many homes, the baby picks from a tray of objects that playfully “predicts” their future. Customs and timing differ by family, and the baby’s doctor is the best guide on first foods.
