What’s on the “down” worksheet

Read and trace “down”, write it alone, circle it among town, dawn, do, own and dot, then trace “I go down the slide.”

Prints on A4 or US Letter (choose “Fit to page”).

How to teach “down”

Teach the ow sound in down by linking it to a word your child already says, like “ow!” when they bump a knee. Then blend d-ow-n. Point downwards every time you read it so the movement and the word connect.

Sentences with “down”

  • Sit down, please.
  • The ball rolled down.
  • We ran down the hill.
  • Look down at your feet.

Game: Up and down stairs

On a staircase or a few steps, tape word cards on alternate steps. Your child reads each card as they climb. When they reach the word down, they turn round and walk down one step before carrying on.

Practise next

Try “up” and “jump” next: both describe movement like down.

Questions about “down”

My child reads down as “dawn”. What helps?

Remind them that o and w together often make the “ow” sound, like in cow and now. Saying “ow” with a little hop helps them remember.

Should I teach up and down together?

Yes. Opposites are easier to remember as a pair, and the worksheet sentences give plenty of chances to use both.
