How to say the /j/ sound
Push your lips forward a little, put your tongue behind your top teeth and say a short, voiced /j/, like the start of jump. Keep it short: “j”, not “juh”.
How to teach the letter j sound
Jump! Every time your child hears /j/ at the start of a word, they jump. Start with obvious ones (jam, jelly, juice), then add some sneaky non-j words. Next, look at the worksheet pictures and talk about each one, as some, like jewel and jar, may be new words for your child.
More /j/ words to say together
Jam, jet, jog, jug, job, jump, jelly, jungle.
Watch out for
The /j/ sound can also be spelled with g, as in giraffe and gem. That is a puzzle for later. For now, j words are the best way to learn the sound.
Game: Jumping jar
Put some j picture cards and some others in a jar. Your child pulls one out: if it starts with /j/, they do a star jump. If not, they wiggle like a jellyfish.
Everyday practice
Juice at breakfast, jackets for going out, jigsaws on a rainy day: point out each /j/.
Tongue twister
Jolly jellyfish jump in the jam jar.
Trace and write the letter j
Practise writing the letter too: uppercase J tracing, lowercase j tracing and cursive j.
Practise next
Next, try letter k and letter l. Once most letter sounds are secure, blend them into CVC words.
Letter J sound questions
Why does giraffe start with g?
The letter g makes the /j/ sound before e, i and y in many words, such as giant and gem. This page uses the j spelling to keep things simple.
My child says “dzump” or “zump”. What helps?
Young children often simplify the /j/ sound. Model it clearly in fun words like jump and jelly, and it usually develops by school age.
