How to teach “ride”

The silent e at the end makes the i say its name, like in bike and hide. Write rid and ride next to each other to show how the e changes the word. Then make a list of things your child would like to ride, from a train to a dinosaur.

  • Let’s ride the swing.

Game: Ride the line

Put tape on the floor in a wiggly line. Your child “rides” a toy car along it while reading cards at each stop: “Ride to the door”, “Ride to the sofa”. Change the cards to make new routes.

Practise next

Try “ran” and “went” next: they are more action words that tell stories about going places.

Questions about “ride”

How does the e in ride work?

A silent e at the end of a word often makes the vowel before it say its name. Rid becomes ride, and hid becomes hide.

Point to the i in the middle and remind them of the silent e. Saying “ride a bike” together often clicks.
