Sight Word “were” Worksheet – Printable Reading Practice
“Were” is the past form of are: we were happy, they were at the park. It sounds like “wer”, not like where.
Quick game – Now or then?
Read short sentences with are and were. Your child points to a “now” sign for are and a “then” sign for were. Then they make up a sentence of their own.
A simple way to teach “were”
Were is tricky because it looks like where and here. Write were and draw a little clock next to it to show it is about the past. Practise by talking about yesterday: where were you? We were at Gran’s. Put were cards next to are cards to compare now and then.
Read these together
- We were at the beach.
- They were very happy.
- Where were you?
- The birds were singing.

Next up: “was” and “when” – was is were’s partner, and when is often confused with it.
“were”: number 40 of 41, Dolch first grade list, typical ages 6–7. Review the primer words first if it feels hard.
Four steps on one page
Trace the big “were”, write it on the line, circle it but skip where, here, wear, we and wire, then trace and read “We were at the beach.”.
Print one per child, or slip it in a plastic sleeve and reuse it with a dry-wipe pen.
