How to Teach Numbers 11 to 20 in 5 Steps

  1. Count to ten first: make sure 1 to 10 feels easy before starting the teens.
  2. Build each number: fill one ten frame, then add the extra ones in the second frame.
  3. Say it two ways: “fourteen” and “ten and four”.
  4. Trace it: follow the green dot and the arrows, then trace the rows.
  5. Count it: count the pictures, the top row of ten first, then the rest.

One number a day is plenty. Go back to 11, 12 and the numbers your child mixes up.

Why teen numbers are tricky

In the teens, the words and the digits come in a different order. We hear the “four” in fourteen first, but we write the 1 first. Eleven and twelve have their own special names. That is why so many children write 41 for fourteen, and why it is not a cause for worry.

Every worksheet in this set shows the number in two ten frames, so your child can see that the first digit means one full ten and the second digit tells you how many extra ones there are.

Skills your child builds

  • Reading and writing the numbers 11 to 20
  • Reading the number words eleven to twenty
  • Understanding ten and some more (early place value)
  • Counting on from ten instead of starting again
  • Pencil control with two-digit numbers

Frequently Asked Questions

What age are numbers 11 to 20 worksheets for?

Most children are ready at 4 to 6, once they can count to ten and write most of the numbers 1 to 10. If 1 to 10 still feels hard, start with our number tracing 1 to 10 pages.

Why are teen numbers hard for children?

The words do not match the way the numbers are written. We say “four-teen” but write the 1 first, and eleven and twelve do not follow the pattern at all. Ten frames help children see what each digit means.

What is a ten frame?

A ten frame is a 2-by-5 grid that holds ten counters. Two ten frames side by side show teen numbers as one full ten plus some ones, which is the idea behind place value.

Can I print the whole set at once?

Yes. The 11 to 20 bundle has all ten worksheets in one PDF. You can also print single pages from each number’s page.

Can I use these worksheets in my classroom?

Yes. Every worksheet is free for home and classroom use. Please share the page link rather than re-uploading the PDF.
